Design Trinity
One of CII’s key design initiatives has been “CII NID Design Summit”, India’s premier and largest design event for last 13 years. The Summit has been bringing on one platform the best of the Indian and International design thinkers, design policy makers, designers, design educators and design users for sharing and learning from each other. Details about the earlier summits are available onwww.ciidesign.in.

The theme of the 14th CII NID Design Summit is “Design Trinity”. In today’s interconnected and complex world, it is the trinity of business, technology and design that is essential for companies and societies to achieve new products, new services and new businesses.

The 14th CII NID Design Summit is scheduled for 20-22 Nov 2014 at India Expo Centre, Greater NOIDA, Delhi NCR. The annual CII Design Excellence Awards would also be given at the Summit like previous years. It is planned to release the 3rd edition of India Design Reportand first–ever India Design Year Book (published by Penguin India) at the Summit.

The 14th CII NID Design Summit this year will be hosted as part of the flagship event Knowledgexpo 2014. The design community has been expressing the need to bring industry and Government stakeholders on the Design Platform. The Knowledgexpo 2014 is a response to this.

The Knowledgexpo 2014 will be converging initiatives in the areas of Technology, R&D, Higher Education, IPR, Design, Innovation & Entrepreneurship under one platform – a single mega global event during 18-22 November, 2014 at India Expo Centre, Greater Noida, Delhi NCR.  The 12,000 square meters Knowledgexpo 2014 spread across 5 days, will showcase the world’s best futuristic technologies in manufacturing technology, life sciences and biotechnology, renewable energy, sustainable urbanization, IT, robotics and animation and security technology and many more innovative products and services. The 5 concurrent global summits like the Technology summit, the IPR summit, Higher Education summit and Design summit will bring together some of the industry’s most knowledgeable, most influential and most thoughtful people to delve into many important topics, issues and trends.

Challenging anthropocentrism in the design of sustainable futures

http://nordes.org/nordes2015
Design sits on a natural-artificial continuum. However, it is realised through a natural capacity of humans to produce what we call ‘the artificial’. At a time when human activity is threatening biodiversity and causing severe climate change, it becomes obvious that natural and artificial systems can no longer be conceived in isolation. They need to be understood, designed and studied in relation to each other – or indeed as a whole.
However, the coupling of natural and artificial systems poses challenges due to their complexity. This coupling also partly reveals the anthropocentrism that has historically characterised much of design.
Several questions arise in this context. One central question is: How might design practices embrace pluralism by recognising, in the manifestation of design itself, biological as well as cultural diversity?
At Nordes 2015 these and many other issues will be examined and discussed, articulating how designers, educators and researchers of design currently engage with these challenges, and how they might or should engage with them in the near future.
